Memorial Service for Brian Herrington - 1 March 2020

On Sunday 1st March 2020,  a memorial service was held in the School Chapel; this was attended by boarders, governors, staff and ex-staff, friends and members of Brian’s family.  The service was led by Halcyon Meldrum and the organist was Alison Evans.  The headmaster gave the first tribute with particular reference to Brian’s hard work on behalf of the boarding community.  I then spoke about the delight and fun of working with Brian for over 30 years; I included tributes from Old Felicians and from Tom Chapman, retired Bursar, who had been his line manger and good friend during Brian’s period of ill-health.  A choral group sang Howard Goodall’s arrangement of The Lord is my Shepherd and the service included the School Hymn ‘He Who Would Valiant Be’ and the School Prayer ‘O God, who shewest forth Thy Light in every age’ (I wonder how many of you could still recite this without needing to look at the service sheet?).

Following the service, the congregation had the opportunity to see the bench which has been installed in Brians’s memory, on the grass outside the front of the dining rooms.  It is very easy to imagine Brian sitting there while taking a well-deserved break from his extensive duties.  Brian will not be forgotten by generations of Felicians.
